As part of the “XRGREEN.CON” project, a dedicated webinar series explores how Circular Economy (CE) principles and Extended Reality (XR) technologies are shaping the future of the construction sector.
The first webinar, titled “Sustainability & Circular Economy in Construction – Understanding the Transformation,” provided participants with a comprehensive introduction to the key challenges and opportunities linked to sustainable construction practices
The session featured Anton Breinbauer, Director at fors.earth GmbH, a Munich-based sustainability consultancy. He guided participants through the fundamental concepts of sustainability and circular economy, highlighting their growing importance in the construction industry. The webinar addressed global environmental challenges such as climate change and resource scarcity, and illustrated how these issues directly impact the construction sector – one of the most resource-intensive industries worldwide.
Participants gained insights into how circular economy principles can help reduce environmental impact across the entire building lifecycle – from design and material selection to construction, use, and deconstruction. The session also emphasized the crucial role of decision-making in early project stages, where up to 80–90% of lifecycle impacts are determined.
Overall, the webinar set the foundation for the series by building a shared understanding of the systemic transformation underway in the construction sector and highlighting the importance of integrating sustainability and digital innovation into education and practice.
