The University of Rijeka (UNIRI) is the fundamental educational and research institution in the western part of Croatia. Founded in 1973, the University of Rijeka has matured into a modern European university and center of excellence whose impact extends beyond the region. With a total of 12 faculties and 4 departments, 12 specialized research centers, with over 161 study programs it is a research, science, and education-oriented university that supports social and economic development in its community, the City of Rijeka, and the wider region. The University of Rijeka has over 18000 students, over 1700 employees, and almost 1000 researchers. By building a state-of-the-art campus, the University of Rijeka has visibly improved its teaching methods and scientific structure, while attending to each student’s and staff member’s living and working needs. University of Rijeka is the first Croatian University to have developed a Gender Equality Plan, it is open university, innovative university devoted to lifelong learning with mission to be university of the future open to everyone. UNIRI has extensive experience in managing EU projects through its Centre for EU projects, with several successfully realized international and EU projects in a diversity of EU R&D programs and funds (ESF, ERDF, Erasmus+, Horizon 2020).

The Faculty of Civil Engineering, as one of the faculties under the University of Rijeka, was established in 1969 and offers various university and professional education programs in civil engineering (construction, geotechnics, hydrotechnics, transportation, computational modelling of materials and structures) as well as lifelong learning programs and minors. The faculty is an active and internationally recognized partner in promoting existing and creating new knowledge in the field of civil engineering and related scientific disciplines. It is organized into five departments belonging to different areas of civil engineering, technical science, or interdisciplinary fields. The continuous development of human resources has ensured the work of 85 staff members at present. It is located on the modern University campus, in a building of approximately 15,000 m2, with 14 lecture halls with modern equipment, six practicums, three IT cabinets, two rooms for independent student work and five excellent equipped laboratories. Internationalization, mobility, and hosting of foreign students is one of the strategic goals of the faculty, in which the Faculty of Civil Engineering sees a great opportunity for cooperation and progress.
Mission of the Faculty is the education and professional development of academic staff from the field of civil engineering and related technical and natural science branches. Faculty mission is also to promote the profession of civil engineering and raise awareness of its importance for sustainable development within the wider community, while promoting academic principles and contributing to the development of the city, region, and the Republic of Croatia. The faculty acts according to the principles of academic integrity and professional ethics, academic freedom, public responsibility and equal opportunities for all staff and students and accepts international quality standards in the evaluation of its activities, offering university studies at undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels and two vocational study programs.
